Preparing for the playa

One of the delights of Burning Man is 'planning to go'. It's a chance to sort out your life in terms of what's important to you: your survival, and what you need to enjoy yourself.

So, deciding what to take to the playa can be a personal exploration of who you are.

The Burning Man environment is ever changing and indescribable. It is invigorating, uplifting and exhausting all at the same time. Take good care of yourself so that you can appreciate where you are.

Be sure to read the official Burning Man Survival Guide on the burningman.com website. This really is required reading. It will answer many of your questions, as well as give you many good ideas.

Burning Man mailing lists are another great way to exchange camping hints and lists, as well as collaborate on projects and build friendships. Join the AEZ mailing list to meet a great group of humans!

The weeks go whizzing by. Finally, it's that special day when you pack the vehicle! As many burners have discovered, it's easy to take too much stuff. Don't overload your vehicle! Divide up your list into "Must take" and "Would like to take". Pack the latter part last...if there's room.

Pre-build and test your projects, shelters, etc, at home before heading to the playa: repairs and design changes are *much* easier to do at home. You've heard the stories about the storms: they are all true! Winds can exceed 50 mph, white-out dust storms can last for hours, and soaking thunderstorms can blow in out of nowhere.
